The
case of the missing gas mileage
Contrary to common perception, the major
automakers have produced large increases in fuel efficiency through
better technology in recent decades. There’s just one catch: All
those advances have barely increased the mileage per gallon that
autos actually achieve on the road. Specifically, between 1980 and
2006, the average gas mileage of vehicles sold in the United States
increased by slightly more than 15 percent — a relatively modest
improvement.

Muffin Makeover: Dispelling the Low-Fat-Is-Healthy
Myth
Dozens
of studies, many from Harvard School of Public
Health researchers, have shown that low-fat diets
are no better for health than moderate- or high-fat
diets—and for many people, may be worse. To combat
this “low fat is best” myth, nutrition experts at
HSPH and chefs and registered dietitians at The
Culinary Institute of America have developed five
new muffin recipes that incorporate healthy fats and
whole grains, and use a lighter hand on the salt and
sugar.

Money: Javelin Announces the Top Ten Trends for 2012 |
| The
movement to switch banks will force consumers to choose:
fees or convenience? Occupy Wall Street protests, anger over
banking fees, and the rhetoric of election-year politics
will spur many Americans to consider dumping big banks in
favor of community banks and credit unions. Although smaller
FIs charge lower fees and have higher levels of customer
service, they typically cannot match giant banks in terms of
convenient 24/7 multichannel banking that features extensive
branch and ATM networks, online banking, bill pay, and
mobile banking.
