What Local Food Pantry's Mean To A Community

Pendleton, Indiana – A short time ago we did a story about the Pendleton Library’s Community Garden and their efforts to help a community in need. This tremendous effort is making a difference.

We spoke with Mr. Greg Valentine, Green Township Trustee, about what the Pendleton Library’s Garden and their efforts. Greg shared with us just some of what it takes for him and local Food Pantry's to do what they do.

The South Madison Community Food Pantry is a joint effort between:

South Madison Community Church and Greg Valentine, Green Township Trustee

The facility was opened to the public in November 2007. Hours are 10-12 every Saturday morning.

During the past 18 months the following amounts of goods have been distributed:

2500 cartons of milk

5700 loaves of bread and pastry

8 tons of non-perishable food

350 dozen eggs

400 pounds of packaged beef and ham

Garden produce from the Pendleton Community Garden

Some clean used clothing is also in most sizes

Other services available at the SMCC and Green Township Satellite Office, all at the same location are:

Free Internet service available on the 5 computers available

Township Assistance applications filed

V-Can Office available for applying for Food Stamps, TANIF and other services the FSSA provides

Computer instructional classes are being booked for the fall

Our goal will continue to be to reach out to those challenged families in the South Madison County communities.
