Anderson, Indiana – Last Saturday night roughly 3,000 people came together for one great benefit for two young men who lost their lives on I69 last February. The benefit was held for the families of Ryan A. Phillips, 28, Anderson and Dustin R. Goettman, 27, Anderson who were great friends and co-workers.

A friend of mine, Mark Merritt, had told me about this event and had invited me to come out to help cover this story. Mark, what a great story this turned out to be. Not only was this benefit for the families who lost loved ones much too early and tragically, but it was as much a celebration of the lives of two very special people.  I have been to a lot of benefit events in the last few years but this was very special. You don’t know who to give the most credit to for what they were doing Saturday night. Certainly credit needs to be given to the host’s of the event, Aaron Goen his wife Sharon. But credit also should be given to the scores of volunteers who helped to make the event a fun and safe time for all that came.

The report from the Pendleton Post of the Indiana State Police just after the accident was as follows, “Hamilton County - On today’s date, 02-03-2009, at approximately 9:45 a.m., the Indiana State Police, Pendleton Post, began receiving calls of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 69 south bound approximately two miles south of the State Road 238 exit (Verizon Music Center).

A Fishers Fire Department Engine Truck was responding to the scene of a reported inverted vehicle at the eight mile marker on southbound Interstate 69.  As the Fishers Fire truck was still southbound approaching the eight mile marker another southbound vehicle rear ended the fire truck setting off a chain reaction crash totaling 22 vehicles and nine semi tractor trailers.  The firefighters were not injured in the crash.

A total of eleven people were transported to area hospitals.  Five motorists refused treatment at the scene.  Investigators are compiling witness statements at this time.  Preliminary cause of the crash is attributed to drivers driving too fast for the conditions at the time.  Near white out conditions existed at the time of the crash due to blowing snow. “
