Beware
of the
Star 72
Phone
Scam
Lowell-The
Indiana
State
Police
at
Lowell
have
received
a number
of calls
in the
last
couple
of weeks
about
people
receiving
phone
calls
from
individual/s
telling
them
that
their
assistance
is
needed
or that
something
very
serious
has
happened
(i.e.
car
crash),
and then
instructed
to call
a number
to get
help or
more
information.
The
number
they
tell
them to
call
always
has *72
at the
beginning.
If you
dial *72
before
dialing
the
number
you are
actually
transferring
your
phone
number
over to
a scam
artist
for
making
as many
phone
calls as
he
wants.
Star 72
is a
custom
feature
for call
forwarding.
When you
dial *72
followed
by a
telephone
number,
it
activates
the call
forwarding
feature
causing
all your
incoming
calls to
ring at
another
number.
At the
end of
the
other
line-whether
calls
have
been
forwarded
to a
landline,
a cell
phone or
a pay
phone-the
original
caller's
partner-in-crime
is able
to
accept
all
collect
and
third-party
calls,
while
telling
your own
legitimate
callers
that
they
have the
wrong
number.
You get
billed
for all
calls
made
because
your
number
is the
one from
which
they are
forwarded.
Some of
these
could be
international
calls
that
could
cost you
hundreds
or
thousands
of
dollars.
If you
get this
call:
Never
enter
*72 into
your
phone
unless
you
fully
intend
to
transfer
your
phone to
another
location.
Don't
call any
phone
number
that
seems
suspicious
without
checking
it out
first.
You can
sometimes
do this
by doing
a
reverse
directory
search
of the
number
on the
internet
or
calling
your
telephone
company
for
assistance.
Report
the
number
to your
local
police.
If you
realize
that
this has
happened,
you can
shut the
transfer
of your
telephone
off by
pushing
*73, and
then
immediately
call
your
telephone
company
to
report
the
call.
This
scam
ONLY
works if
the
victim
had
previously
signed
up for
the
call-forwarding
option
with his
phone
service
provider.
Customers
that are
unsure
can call
their
phone
company
to
verify
if they
have
subscribed
to the
call
forwarding
service.
