The Quest For Youth |
The
list of “latest and greatest” cosmetic procedures aimed at improving our
personal appearance grows daily. But in the quest to find bodily
perfection, some people fall prey to fast-fix procedures that set high
expectations for an even higher price tag.
“Many of these newer procedures advertised for eliminating unwanted fat
or eliminating cellulite are not scientifically proven to work or have
lasting effects,” says W. John Kitzmiller, MD, chief of plastic at UC
and surgeon with University Hospital. “Patients should focus on getting
the best treatment available rather than pursuing expensive quick fixes
that leave them frustrated with results and out of money.

Awful Diet Trend |
School
children who consume foods purchased in vending machines are more likely to
develop poor diet quality – and that may be associated with being overweight,
obese or at risk for chronic health problems such as diabetes and coronary
artery disease, according to research from the University of Michigan Medical
School.
“The foods that children are exposed to early on in life influence the pattern
for their eating habits as adults,” says lead study author Madhuri Kakarala,
M.D., Ph.D., clinical lecturer of internal medicine.

The Doughnut Hole |
|
People in Medicare Part D who reach the dreaded coverage gap, or “doughnut
hole,” are forced to pay the full price of their prescriptions, in addition to
their monthly premiums. This year, those who fall into the coverage gap will
receive a $250 check to help with their expenses. Medicare announced this week
that it has mailed its one millionth check. Starting in 2011, people who reach
the doughnut hole will receive a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs. By
2020, the doughnut hole will be eliminated entirely. More

Sex and the Media |
|
Today there are more reasons than ever to pay
attention to media messages about sexuality and contraception. Teens spend more
than seven hours a day on average with various forms of media, often without
adults around. Television shows and Web sites that are popular with teens—and
the way sex is portrayed in those venues—could be important factors in the
initiation of sexual intercourse.

8 Life Insurance Myths |
Myth #1: There’s a universal database of life
insurance policies that I can use to find my relative’s policy number.
This problem often starts with the insured person, who never fully divulges
where the policy paperwork is kept. Beneficiaries can’t make a claim without
knowing at least the name of the life insurance company. Unfortunately there is
no company or agency that tracks all life insurance policies sold in the United
States.

Will Paris Pay The Piper? |
Paris Hilton's most recent scandal in Las Vegas and
utter disregard for the law should be her last. If Hilton is convicted of
cocaine possession, she could face up to four years in prison under Nevada law.
Hilton's ridiculous antics in 2007 led to a 45-day jail sentence for a DUI and
probation violation. When released, she famously preached about her "new
beginning" during her Larry King interview, and her newfound desire to lead a
better lifestyle following her traumatic jail experience.

They’re Phony and Costly |
|
According to the reports received by the Indiana
Attorney General’s Office, fake debt collectors are impersonating law
enforcement officers, lawyers or other official sounding agencies such as the
“IRS Collection Service.” The scammers use very aggressive tactics to scare the
consumer into paying the alleged debt. They accuse the victim of defaulting on a
loan and, in some cases, claim they are about to be sued or even worse – they
will tell the consumer they will be arrested and taken to jail if they don’t
pay.

Scammers Targeting Job Hunters |
According to the Labor Department, new jobless claims in mid-August unexpectedly
jumped to 500,000, an increase of 12,000 over the previous week. Not only did
jobless claims rise suddenly, but the length of unemployment is bleak for many.
According to a July report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 45
percent of unemployed Americans had been out of work for more than 6 months.
The dismal employment rate means that a lot of people are desperate for work and
may be grasping for any job which creates a great opportunity for scammers. More |
