April 2008 (Medialink) - With oil prices continuing to
rise, the average tank of gas can cost over $60 to fill.
According to a survey by AAA and the Oil Price
Information Service, the national average price of a
gallon of regular gas, $3.51, has hit record highs. And
with no sign of relief ahead, drivers are looking for
ways to cut down on fuel costs.
Experts say there are ways to make a trip to the pump a
little less painful. Maintaining proper tire pressure is
critical and can save up to two percent of your fuel
economy. When air pressure becomes too low, the engine
has to work harder and uses more fuel then necessary.
Speed can also be a factor, as the aerodynamic drag of a
car at high speeds is a huge energy consumer. Every five
miles per hour over 60 is equal to paying an additional
20 cents a gallon. The EPA says that driving sensibly
and going the recommended speed limit can improve your
mileage anywhere from 5-30%.
